So, here we are. We’re doing it! A second edition of tl;dr – back less by popular demand, and more because we promised it on Instagram.
Welcome back to your favourite overshare of second-hand-news. We’ve got your fix of the latest in graphic design, codes, processes and of course, vibe. Get into the weeds, have a read, leave a comment and if you’re extra onto it – subscribe to stay there.
If you’re interested in hearing more about Love + Money, our goals and our priorities, Charl’s put together some words you can and should read here.
#graphic-design-is-my-passion
Dunno about you but all we’ve ever wanted is the ability to filter fonts by mood and this week this specific dream came true. Font Brief curates the latest and greatest fonts and places them on personality scales like Elegant/Rugged and Cold/Warm.
We’ve also been frothing over CD&Co’s new brand/website for Saskia Wilson (who hasn’t?)
Speaking of photographers, we came across another couple of sites that really stand out in design, content, and interaction, from Sam Hofman and Julien Tavel.
Lastly, we’re loving the 10th Anniversary issue of Port Magazine, check it out here.
#code-city
Did anyone cash in on that RAM discount last week? It’s still going, and we’re working on an affiliate discount code with these guys (we are definitely not, and are not able to help you with your bad decisions).
So, the codes – the trailer for the new Space Jam looks exciting, and being sporty nerds we were just as excited to watch the speed test showdown between the 1996 site and today’s by Max Böck, we won’t spoil who wins.
Hunky Bill (our nemesis) was a subject of conversation this week too. For those of you that don’t know who or how hunky Hunky Bill is, Dog summed up his energy pretty perfectly in 2017 when Trump references were a thing.
Anyway, Hunky Bill was sighted recently and is Internationally famous because of spiels like this (the Internet, huh?), his tone is as fire as his tips, so thanks Hunky/Bill. We appreciate you and your piffle.
As mentioned last week, we’re gettin’ right into the potential of no code solutions, here are some highlights:
Universe is literally a mobile app that allows you to make a shop in literally 7 minutes.
Bravo Studio is something that we’ve been messing around with a little bit. We’re a long way off making an app straight outta Figma, but damn it looks promising. Stackbit is another li’l’ sneaky that allows a site to be tweaked or edited right up on its face, sans-CMS.
^ it is fully lit Charl. We’re gonna be experimenting with these and more over the next little while, so get at us in the comments if you have like, opinions.
#vibe
Big vibes this fortnight. Here’s your hot take.
Music was getting a bit moody until our intern, Lucy, sent us Citypop シティーポップ on Wednesday. Taking the #vibe from a 4 to an 8 (if you’re into that kinda thing). Adnaan had another go at graphic design, this time impressing the likes of Hot Patrick.
Despite repeated requests, Wonkbork did not mind its own business.
We discovered Justin Bieber is using a GIF for his latest album artwork. Charl said it’s the future. Then Newton found out you can use them for pitch deck pointers. Charl said it’s a time to be alive. I don’t know who Christian is, but he sent us this website and I’ve been on it for a good ten minutes. Try and read without tilting your head though.
#processes-and-platforms
We’ve been trying to make and break some processes this week, these have been some highlights from the channel:
We’ve been getting real nerdy with our emails. Newton is a great resource for email management and keeping on top of who’s left you on read. The Email app read receipts, gives reminders, daily summaries, combined multiple email accounts, etc. There's used to be a calendar app for it and it might return from the grave at some point. When it was last resurrected they published this dope Nolt board for upcoming features. We stan.
Ever wondered what would make your list of top 5 coolest words? We have. Fugazi is on ours and it should be on yours too. We’ve been thinking about how we can add more into our lives, so far they’re in our playlist for if we ever need to channel some Wall Street energy, will we ever?
A key program for our designers is Principle. Principle makes it easy to design animated and interactive user interfaces. It a great tool for us to build out micro-interactions and help our devs understand how designs come to life. The latest updates now come with web share, something we’re excited to dive into and share with clients.
Figma released FigJam this week… it really goes to show that putting a ™ after every phrase is important – we’ve been Figjamming for nearly a year, this new release is a sticky one for Pat. Theirs is a little different though; an online white-boarding space to ideate and brainstorm together… we’re excited to see how we can integrate this into our process, audio is definitely going to be a thing…
Seems like this Substack is a thing we do now? So we’re going to keep overpromising – it’s gonna get better, more interesting, and spicier so go on, comment, share or press the green button.
