tl;dr February Edition: More AI, Automation, and In-Jokes Than You Can Handle.
Another month, another chance to milk the AI and automation hype for all it's worth. Because let's face it, who needs human workers when you can just program a machine to do it for you?
In our never-ending quest to keeping it Always Beta, we've made a bold move and swapped out our 3D R&D channel for something even more exciting: The Lab™. That's right, we've slapped a trademark symbol on it, because why defend your IP with a lawyer when a graphic design could do the job instead?
The robots are here, we love to see it.

Interactive design is pretty cool. It makes for a much more engaging user experience when users can participate and personalise their experience. Also, when you combine interactivity with a solid branding and strategy, it can communicate the brand’s values and personality further.
Lately, we've been keeping an eye on some interactive designs.
We enjoyed the scroll interaction for Crosswire, which takes you through a whole digital world for you to explore.
We also enjoyed the slick use of SVG Lottie Files on Ventriloc, which adds heaps of character to the sophisticated design of the website.
Interactive design doesn’t need to be limited to custom websites and apps; Pablo Rochat nails how to be interactive on Instagram posts. Good to know Instagram still has some good shit going on – check it out.

Recently, LAM has been looking for ways to integrate Artificial Intelligence into our workflow. Or figuring out if we even should.
We're all in on the AI workflow, call us lazy, whatever. Work smarter, not harder babe. While none of our experiments have led to anyone being let go, they have revealed a vibe here and there, most recently in 3D for Jacq (a human, in-house Houdini Queen). Here are some of her reckons:
Chat GPT: My top searches are; How do I do this in Houdini? Can you write me a breakup text to someone that cheated on me and make it savage? Can you write my tl;dr? Easy to use. Big slay.
MidJourney & Dall-E: For MidJourney, you must speak like a robot and be specific about the 3D idea you envision. It usually turns out looking like a weird Pixar movie, but it’s good at receiving instructions. Dall-e, however, is much better for abstract ideas and way better compositions based on the same prompts that I use in Midjourney. But blow the image up, and you’ll see that it’s still learning and often misses really fine details. Like when I asked it to make flowers out of particles and crochet, it ended up looking like fairy floss, but maybe that’s user error?
But, while we’ve been caught up in the excitement of potentially shifting 25% of our workload to AI tools, Dog raised an interesting point in #rubber-duck this week:
Do we have to specify when work is created by Artificial Intelligence instead of in the sentient minds of our organic, cage-free LAM employees?
Copyright law, as it currently stands, only recognises humans as authors. And only human authors are given moral rights. Thus, AI does not have any rights under copyright law. I asked Chat GPT if they were sad about this, and:
Okay, at least we can’t upset them. Unless… 👀
We’re definitely not adequate legal counsel, but our findings* suggest that crediting the use of AI where appropriate is the dignified thing to do (stay classy). It’s also best to be transparent and might cover your ass for the future. AI’s gotta be keeping receipts somewhere…

#vibe
One of our biggest vibes of the year was the opening of our UK offices 🇬🇧 🔥
Unfortunately our office isn’t picture perfect as of yet, we’re yet to throw up any edgy headshots or clever idioms in big (neon) lights.
So instead, I’ve taken the liberty to replace the photo Barnaby sent us with a picture of that big clock tower in London. What’s its name again? Bill? Or is that the bell… unsure.
If you ever find yourself in the UK, just look up at Ben’s face, and 👋
We’ll wave back, promise.
Another big win for us was ‘Best Pie.xlsx’ dropping into the #vibe channel, an exciting day for all of us. This 2017 spreadsheet was intended to be used as a travel itinerary to road trip around NZ to “find the best pie”.
I don’t think Adnaan ever took that trip around New Zealand — and now every time I speak to him, I think of this scene from Good Will Hunting.
Finally, to tie it all together in a nice artificially created bow 🎀 our resident beast-mode (first name: Beast, last name: Mode, default-position: On), had a moment of honesty with me before our TL;DR deadline.
I’m glad we can rely on ChatGPT to bail us out of damn near anything.
#processes-and-platforms
It’s dark in the city at night and a crime has been committed. A blurry, out-of-focus CCTV frame is all the officers have to work with. Keyboards clack. Processors whirr. The image increases in size. Magically, the pixels rearrange – into the face of the perp! The Enhance Button, a staple of any reputable crime drama, is finally here, friends. It’s called Topaz, and it’s had #processes-and-platforms buzzing this month. Very occasionally, it seems, the future is actually roughly what we all had in mind.
