What’s been going on at your favourite place on the Internet? There were emotions. Here’s more than you need to know…
Surprise, surprise, it’s another opening paragraph less about tl;dr and more about our extra special articles. This time the button works (how did we mess that up twice?). #alwaysbeta.
Anyway, click the button below, upgrade your subscription and get ready to take our relationship to the next level, starting with The Files™.
The last fortnight…
#graphic-design-is-my-passion
This week we’re passionate about railroad ladies, strong noodles and wacky socks. Go figure?
We’re also excited by this sneak peak of Universal Serif from Family Type. If you aren’t familiar with the original Universal Sans, it allows you to create your own customised cut, starting with a base typeface. Pretty cool, huh?
And lastly, this isn’t new but it’s too cool not to share: NVIDIA has an AI which translates your drawings into photorealistic landscapes. It’s super fun to play with! Super. Fun.
#code-city
Lately Brooke likes to use #code-city to refresh herself on the basics. Namely SEO. TL;DR within TL;DR? Sure! You’re welcome!
For those of you who sit in that never too long length club (read: nerds) – we’ve been looking into the benefits of React vs. Angular when it comes to SEO. Turns out neither is without its drawbacks. We’re still sitting firmly in Camp React for now.
There was some flurry around this article about Tailwind CSS v2.2 – forgive the author’s lack of enthusiasm, basically from what I know – it means a good thing just got better, and that’s a good thing. It sounded a lot like we love to see it.
(It’s Brooke. I wrote this.) In other news that I don’t understand but we do as a collective – progress in tech is relentless, but at the same time it’s still 2015? No one’s come up with a use case for blockchain yet and Shopify still won’t let us control our URL structure.
It seems like a pretty simple limitation – to have non-eComms pages without that /pages/ prefix (e.g. contact, about, …). Makes sense, right? Because SEO, yeah? Wait – I wonder what Hunky Bill thinks….
Classic HB. CLASSIC. Aethetics? Not in this life!
In summary, the future is now. Except when it comes to SEO, Shopify URL structures, and blockchain. Then it’s 2015. It’s probably for the best. The future is terrifying – Black Mirror told us in 2011. (We’re listening now though.)
#vibe
Our #vibe was certainly not knocked these past couple of weeks, even if there was a lockdown in Melbourne.
The first topic of conversation - emo music, is it ironic? Is it sincere? Important questions, lucky we had experts on hand to make sense of it.
Turns out emo still bangs, and if you want a whirlwind tour, we have something for everyone that doesn’t use Tidal. A quick 101 for Apple Music and Spotify users. You’re welcome.
Former Global Design Head of R/GA Mike Rigby shared Proto’s underpinning philosophies via Instagram, that we then shared in Slack. We like.
A sadder moment that almost killed our vibe was Pat heading off (we’re feeling doubly fortunate that the emo music debate has been settled). Thankfully wonkbork came to our aid and took parting shots so we didn’t have to, feelings huh? Honeyboy-T dropped off a pizza too.
As one bright light left our studio, so did another - InTern Callen’s actual bedroom light. Dark times… get it?
We’re not sorry.
#processes-and-platforms
A HOY HOY?
Figma now has a shortcut to crop images!
It was Patrick’s last day on Thursday. He left behind so much system. Remember our last article about The System™? The really organised one? Pat is pretty responsible for that whole thing. In fact, we reckon the system got so good we could start comparing it to this. And that’s all the praise you’re getting today Pat.
We also saw the latest instalment of Dan Flynn vs. Figma/The System™…
We’ve really noticed some limitations in Figma when it comes to Artworking. Feeling like The System™ could use some work we need to be deeply precise; think typography, grids and alignment. It smells as though we’ll still need to bring InDesign and Illustrator in more regularly to relieve some pain. That, or you might have a solution for us? Get in the comments plz.
Until then, we’ll be trawling this for some ideas.
